Your Car’s Air Conditioner and Ford Service

When Your A/C Isn't Working

If your air conditioner is on the fritz, you'll know it because you'll be hot. There are actually other consequences, though, of which you might not be aware.

• Warm air: In addition to the car not cooling, it may actually get warmer if you've got the a/c turned on and it's not working. Instead of blowing cold air, it may blow hot air.

• Moisture: There's a part of the a/c system called a receiver, or a dryer. One of its functions is to trap and remove moisture before it reaches the compressor, another part of the a/c. If there's an issue with the receiver, you could experience foggy windows, and possibly even mold.

• Noise: An a/c sounds like a blowing fan. An a/c in need of service sounds loud and not like a fan. In general, any time your auto makes a noise you've never heard before, you should make an appointment with our Ford maintenance department to see what's happening.

Fixing Your A/C

The refrigerant (you may know it as Freon) is a formulated mixture that turns hot air in to cold air. The refrigerant itself evaporates when it's exposed to air, so if you have dripping Freon, you won't see it. Our technicians have a special process for checking the a/c system to rule out leaks. They can also determine if the mixture needs to replaced and recharged.

The condenser is part of the a/c, with fins and tubes that can become clogged. The receiver can be ruined by debris. There are also a number of hoses and valves that can become ineffective due to corrosion or damage.
