Okay recycling experts, show off your knowledge. What is the single most important type of material to recycle? Is it paper, plastic, metal, or glass?
The answer is metal -- particularly aluminum.
Recycling aluminum yields an energy savings of 95 percent, and reduces greenhouse emissions by 95 percent compared to mining, refining, and manufacturing with virgin materials. It takes a huge amount of energy to mine for aluminum, and not much energy at all to melt it down again to re-cast.
When manufacturing the Ford F-150, the Dearborn Truck Plant recycles as much as 20 million pounds of aluminum each month.
Aluminum is also very light-weight compared with steel, which helps give the F-150 superior fuel economy, along with its available EcoBoost engine options. Even the Super Duty is switching to an aluminum body for the unparalleled weight benefit.
Between the use of recycled materials, and high fuel economy, the Automotive Science Group estimates that the Ford F-150 has the smallest carbon footprint of any truck over its life cycle.
